In corporate management, the process is a very important aspect of any project. When the process is not followed adequately the result will be a systems failure. This happens in all sorts of projects. When a company intends to introduce a new eLearning project, a number of procedures need to be followed. This happens in five phases. In this paper, we will look at the five major phases of project development.

Conception phase

This is the phase where the idea is generated. In this step, a person in the business thinks of an ideal situation and works to solve it. There are many sources of ideas. For instance, an eLearning idea can come from a new staff member who experienced its power in his/her previous company. Ideas can also come from market surveys which reveal current trends.

Definition phase

In this phase, the idea generators develop the idea. They look at the merits and disadvantages of the idea. They conduct intense research to ascertain the viability of the process. Some of the metrics that are analysed are: the evaluation strategy, availability of funds, number of employees to be involved and the available human resources to handle the process. This is also the stage when the objectives of the project are created. The objectives must be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time bound).

Planning and organising phase

After conceiving the idea and defining the goals of the project, the company needs to focus on planning and organising. Planning involves devising the strategies which when combined will lead to the desired output. Some of the activities in this phase are: system design, scheduling and budgeting, defining the systems and procedures, identifying the right people to implement the process, research in the eLearning world, procurement and equipping the staff to cope with the impending project. The outcome of this process is a document which covers all aspects of the project.

Implementation is the next step after planning. In implementation, the project manager is given the opportunity to implement everything that is in the planning document. Since this is the most important process of the entire cycle, the project manager should be someone who has experience in project implementation. He should be someone who understands the industry comprehensively. He should create a team which will help him during implementation. Also, he should take time to procure a good system that is credible and cost effective. A good example is the Frog Sense system. Additionally at this stage, the staff should be trained on the procedures for working with the system. The manager should also coordinate the development of the courses.

At this stage testing is done to ensure that the system is working well. All errors should be handled immediately to ensure that the project proceeds without any hitches. Evaluation is very important because it ensures that the project is achieving its specific objectives. A good schedule should be created to ensure that everything is continuing according to plan.
